CONTRACT INFORMATION

A player that is a restricted free agent (RFA) has reached the end of their initial entry-level contract but is not yet an unrestricted free agent. Their rights are still held by the NHL team.

A player is an unrestricted free agent (UFA) if older than 25 (or after 7 years, whichever comes first) and his contract ends. UFAs can sign with any team.

All new players, under the age of 25, are required to sign an entry-level contract. Entry-level contracts are three years if the player is age 18-21, two years if age 22-24, and one year if age 24.

If a player signs an AHL contract, then he is not eligible to play in the NHL.

AHL DEVELOPMENT RULE

In the AHL, player development is a top priority. The American Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association have the following development rule in place:

Of the eighteen (18) skaters (not counting two goaltenders) that teams may dress for a game, at least twelve (12) must be qualified as “development players.” Those 12 players must have played in 260 or fewer professional games (including AHL, NHL and European elite leagues), and be 26 years of age or older. All calculations for development status are based on regular-season totals and age as of the start of the season.

Teams may dress six (6) veteran players each game. There is no limit to how many veteran players a team may have on their roster at a given time.

Veteran statuses are determined prior to each season and do not change during the course of the year.

Below is a list of players under contract with the New York Rangers (NHL) or Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) who qualify as either a veteran for the 2026-27 season.

Qualifying Offers - June 29th (5:00 p.m.): NHL teams must send a Qualifying Offer in order to retain the rights to any Restricted Free Agent. This occurs on the Monday following the NHL Entry Draft. With the draft being held on the 26th and 27th of June, this year's QO deadline is Monday, June 29th.

Teams are not required to send Qualifying Offers to RFAs. RFAs that do not receive a Qualifying Offer become UFAs on July 1, the opening of NHL Free Agency.

The qualifying offer is calculated from the players base salary (NHL salary minus signing bonus), and at a minimum must meet the season minimum salary requirements:

110% of the base salary if the base salary is less than or equal to the league minimum.

105% of the base salary if the base salary is greater than the league minimum or less than $1,000,000. However, this qualifying offer cannot exceed $1,000,000.

100% of the base salary if the base salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000.
