HAMILTON, ON – The Hartford Wolf Pack surrendered four power play goals on Thursday night, dropping a 5-4 overtime decision to the Hamilton Hammers at TD Coliseum.
Jaroslav Chemlař opened the scoring 7:11 into the game, potting the Wolf Pack’s first shorthanded goal of the season.
Carey Terrance made a brilliant play in the neutral zone, getting the puck to Chemlař despite tumbling down to the ice. Chemlař sped by Ryan Healey, cut to the net, and beat Josh Kotai to give the Wolf Pack a 1-0 lead.
Hunter Drew responded 27 seconds later at 7:38, tipping home a Kashawn Aitcheson shot on the power play. Drew’s goal was his first of the season.
The Wolf Pack restored their lead at 9:48 when Matthew Robertson scored his first goal of the season. Justin Dowling fed Robertson at the top of the zone, where he fired a shot into traffic. The puck snuck by Kotai, making it 2-1.
Dowling’s assist on the goal, his third of the season, was the 300th of his AHL career.
Brody Lamb extended the lead to 3-1 at 10:44, potting his first goal of the season. After collecting a pass from Glenn Gawdin, Lamb sped by Healey, burst down the left-wing side, and beat Kotai with a backhander.
Late in the period, the Hammers drew within one with their second power play goal of the night.
Liam Foudy burst down the right-wing side and fed a centering pass to Cole Eiserman. The rookie forward snapped a quick shot over the right shoulder of Spencer Martin from below the hashmarks for his second goal of the season at 18:12.
Cam Thiesing tied the game 14:37 into the second period, blasting home a one-timer for his second goal of the season. Pierre Engvall flung a pass from below the goal line through two defenders and right to Thiesing at the bottom of the left-wing circle.
There, Thiesing blasted home the equalizer.
Matthew Highmore gave the Hammers their first lead of the night at 17:40. With a full two-minute five-on-three, the Hammers went to work. Ryan Healey sent a pass to the top of the blue paint, where Highmore jammed home his third goal of the season and his second in as many games to make it 4-3.
The parade to the penalty box continued in the final frame. This time, however, it was the Wolf Pack who went to work with a two-man advantage. Marc Del Gaizo drew the club even at 3:56 when he stepped into a drive that beat Kotai. The goal was his second of the season.
Hartford controlled a majority of the third period but could not retake the lead. Late in the period, the Hammers drew their eighth power play, which carried over into the extra session.
58 seconds into overtime, Highmore won it for the Hammers. Eiserman fired a shot from the right-wing circle that Martin denied, but Highmore jammed home the rebound for the Hammers’ fourth power play goal of the night. This one came four-on-three.
