Wolf Pack's Miika Wiikman Named Co-AHL Player of the Week
Shares Award with Manchester's Daniel Taylor
Wednesday, January 30, 2007 - 4:00 PM

The American Hockey League today named
Hartford Wolf Pack goaltender Miika Wiikman the co-winner of the Rbk AHL
Player of the Week award for the week ending January 27th. Wiikman
shares the honor with fellow netminder Daniel Taylor of the Manchester
Monarchs, after Wiikman earned wins in all three of the Wolf Pack's
games on the week and posted shutouts in two of them, stopping 92 out of
93 total shots.
Wiikman, a native of Mariestad, Sweden who played the last three seasons
in Finland's top league, rang up his first career North-American pro
shutout in the Wolf Pack's 1-0 win at Albany last Wednesday. Wiikman
made 26 saves in that triumph, the Pack's first shutout in 45 games on
the season. Then, after stopping 29 out of 30 Worcester shots in a 3-1
home victory on Friday night, Wiikman hung a zero on the league-leading
Providence Bruins Saturday night at the XL Center, with a personal
AHL-high 37 stops in a 3-0 win. That was the Wolf Pack's first victory
in five tries on the year vs. the P-Bruins (1-2-1-1).
The big week raised Wiikman's record to 12-4-1 on the year and his save
percentage to .924, third-best in the AHL. Wiikman's goals-against
average now stands at 2.16, which ranks fifth among league backstops.
He is the second Wolf Pack player this season to earn AHL Player of the
Week honors. Nigel Dawes won the award for the week ending December
9th.
The Wolf Pack return from the AHL's All-Star break with back-to-back
home games this Friday and Saturday, February 1st and 2nd. The Pack's
I-91 rivals the Springfield Falcons invade the XL Center Friday on
Guida's Family Value Night, and the Wolf Pack's annual "Scout Sleepover"
highlights Saturday night, as the Pack take on the Bridgeport Sound
Tigers in a GEICO Connecticut Cup matchup. Both games face off at 7:00.
