Wolf Pack Weekly, October 17-23

Wolf Pack Weekly, October 17-23

Oct 17, 2016

The Wolf Pack kicked off their 20th-anniversary season last week by splitting a pair of games.  The Pack got the year off to a rousing start Friday night, with a 6-3 victory over the St. John’s IceCaps at the XL Center.  Veteran forward Philip McRae led the way in that contest with a goal and two assists.  Saturday night was not as kind to the Wolf Pack, however, as they fell in their first road game, 6-2, at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.  Matt Carey scored his first Wolf Pack goal in that one, and Nicklas Jensen notched his first of the season.

This week:  The Wolf Pack are back to the Keystone State on Saturday night, visiting the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for a 7:05 PM game.  Then, it’s the first Sunday home game of the Pack’s season, as the St. John’s IceCaps return for a 5:00 faceoff.

Saturday, October 22 at the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Philadelphia) at the PPL Center, 7:05 PM

  • This is the first of eight games on the season between the Wolf Pack and the Phantoms, and the first of four visits by the Wolf Pack to Allentown.  In last year’s season series, the Wolf Pack won the first three meetings and then lost two of the last three, and went 2-1-0-0 in three trips to the PPL Center.

  • Prior to a 2-1 home loss to Lehigh Valley February 28, the Wolf Pack had won 13 straight games between themselves and the Phantoms, which tied a franchise record for longest winning streak against a single opponent.

  • Lehigh Valley opened its season with a 4-2 home win over Springfield Saturday night.  In 2015-16, Head Coach Scott Gordon’s Phantoms finished 34-35-4-3 for 75 points and in seventh place in the Atlantic Division.

  • Danick Martel led the way for Lehigh Valley in Saturday’s victory over Springfield, with two goals, and defenseman T.J. Brennan, who captured the AHL’s Eddie Shore Award, for best defenseman, with the Toronto Marlies last season, had the game-winning goal and an assist.

  • This is already the second get-together of the season between the Wolf Pack and IceCaps, and the second of St. John’s’ two XL Center visits.  The Pack will be looking for a sweep of their two home games in the series, after having defeated the IceCaps 6-3 on Friday night in the season opener.

  • The IceCaps played a three-game opening weekend, and followed Friday night’s loss to the Wolf Pack with two more setbacks, a 5-2 defeat at Albany Saturday and a 2-1 loss in Providence Sunday.

  • Winger Chris Terry, who had a power-play goal against the Wolf Pack on Friday night, scored twice for the IceCaps Saturday in Albany and is St. John’s’ leading scorer through the first three games (3-0-3).
