Shows You What I Know Dept.: My quiet pick to be a strong playoff team, get out of the Atlantic Division and maybe give Hershey some trouble in the Conference Finals was Portland, and last night they officially became the second team ousted from the Calder Cup playoffs. The Pirates were swept by the Manchester Monarchs, with the final blow being a resounding 7-2 pounding administered by the Monarchs in Game Four.
Kevin Dineen’s Pirates showed all kinds of firepower against the Wolf Pack this year, but it sounds like the goaltending of Manchester’s Jonathan Bernier, of which the Pack also saw more than enough this season, more than trumped Portland’s offensive ammunition. The Pirates were missing dynamic rookie Tyler Ennis, who is averaging nearly 16 minutes of ice time per Stanley Cup playoff game for parent-club Buffalo, and I would have thought that Dineen & Co. had enough depth to fill that void, but it appears as though that wasn’t the case.
