Sharks' Third-period Comeback Foils Pack

T.J. Trevelyan scored the game-winning goal with 1:45 left in the third period Wednesday night at the DCU Center in Worcester, as the Worcester Sharks posted a 6-4, come-from-behind win over the Wolf Pack.

The goal was Trevelyan’s second of the game, scored from in front of the net after Logan Couture threw the puck out of the right-wing corner.

The Wolf Pack led 3-1 in the second period and 3-2 going into the third, marking only the second time all season that Hartford has lost a game in regulation that the Pack led after two periods (20-2-2-1).

Corey Potter had two goals and an assist for the Wolf Pack. Ryan Vesce and Danny Groulx had a goal and an assist each for Worcester, and the Sharks also got goals from Steven Zalewski and Andrew Desjardins.

Brodie Dupont notched a goal and an assist for the Wolf Pack, and Dale Weise also scored. Team leading scorer Corey Locke had two assists, to break the 70-point mark for the season (24-47-71).

The Worcester power play was 3/6 in the win, the Sharks’ first in five tries against the Wolf Pack this season.

With the loss, the Wolf Pack, who are in seventh place in the Atlantic Division, fell to 26-28-6-5 and squandered an opportunity to gain ground on sixth-place Providence and fifth-place Bridgeport, both of whom were idle on Wednesday. The Wolf Pack are now winless in a season-high seven straight games (0-3-3-1).

The Wolf Pack scored first in a game for only the fifth time in their last 21 games, when Potter scored the first of his two first-period goals at 5:54. Potter stepped up from his right-point position and drove a loose puck off Shark goaltender Frank Doyle’s catching glove and into the net.

Worcester tied it on the power play 3:14 later at 9:08, as Zalewski, the Sharks’ leading point-scorer, jammed a rebound past the Wolf Pack’s Matt Zaba. Derek Joslin started the play by stickhandling down from the right point and putting a shot on Zaba.

Potter’s second of the period gave the Wolf Pack a 2-1 advantage at 14:16, on a delayed-penalty situation. Dupont and Locke combined to work the puck to Potter at the middle of the blue line, and Potter’s slap shot beat Doyle to the glove side.

Dupont would get his 13th goal of the season at 10:21 of the second frame to make it a 3-1 Wolf Pack lead, assisted by linemates Locke and P.A. Parenteau. Parenteau blocked Shark defenseman Mike Moore’s pass in the right-wing corner and Locke centered the puck to Dupont, whose shot went off of Doyle and into the net.

The Worcester man-advantage unit struck for its second goal of the game, though, at 14:32 to cut it back to a one-goal margin. Vesce, the Sharks’ captain, working at the left-wing side of the goalmouth, had his try go off of Wolf Pack defender Anders Eriksson and just past Zaba.

It was still 3-2 Wolf Pack going into the third period, but Worcester would score twice in a span of 2:04 starting at 7:26 to take its first lead of the game.

Desjardins tied it at three at 7:26, when he took a centering pass from Dan DaSilva and let go a shot that Zaba got a piece of but could not stop. Then at 9:30 Trevelyan scored his first of the game off of a two-on-one with Kevin Henderson. Again, Zaba had the puck hit him but was unable to keep it out of the goal.

Weise got the Wolf Pack back into a tie at the 13:03 mark, with his 21st goal of the season. Potter again made the play, putting the puck towards the net from the right point, and Weise deflected it over Doyle;s pad and in.

After Trevelyan’s winner at 18:15, Groulx added a power-play, empty-net goal with one second left for the final margin.

The Wolf Pack outshot the Sharks 38-26 in the game, and Doyle made 34 saves to get the win. Zaba allowed five goals on 25 shots in the Hartford net.

Next up for the Wolf Pack is a trip to Springfield on Friday night (7:30 faceoff), before they start a six-game homestand Saturday evening at the XL Center vs. Lowell (7:00).
