Loss at Manchester Ends Pack Win Streak
Manchester Monarch defensemen Andrew Campbell and Viatcheslav Voynov scored goals 2:27 apart early in the third period Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, wiping out a 1-0 Wolf Pack lead and giving the Monarchs a 2-1 win.
The loss snapped a season-high four-game winning streak for the Wolf Pack, who fell to 8-7-0-0 (16 points) on the season, and was only Hartford's second loss in the last eight games.
Despite the Wolf Pack's AHL-leading power play having three opportunities, the first period was scoreless, with the Wolf Pack outshooting Manchester 9-5.
The Pack man-advantage unit did click, though, on its fourth opportunity, 1:49 into the second. With Juraj Mikus in the penalty box for hooking, P.A. Parenteau got his team-leading 10th goal of the year from just inside the left faceoff circle. Corey Locke started the play from the right circle, and Evgeny Grachev deflected the puck to Parenteau. Monarch goaltender Jonathan Bernier got a piece of Parenteau's shot but could not stop it.
Campbell tied it for the Monarchs only 54 seconds into the third frame, with Corey Potter off for interference. Andrei Loktionov found Campbell sneaking down the weak side from his left-point position with a cross-slot feed, and Campbell one-timed the puck past Wolf Pack goaltender Chad Johnson.
Then, at 3:21, Voynov's shot from the right-wing boards hit a Wolf Pack defender on its way to the net and deflected past Johnson, for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Bernier made 26 saves in the Monarch net to get the win. Johnson had 22 stops for Hartford.
The two teams meet again at the XL Center on Friday night (7:00), to complete a home-and-home set.
